Football is a collective term used for all kinds of sports that involve kicking a ball with a foot to score a goal. Sports commonly included in the term football include soccer, gridiron football, rugby football, and Gaelic football. The origin of this game can be traced as far back as the Roman period. The Ancient Greeks and Romans are known to have played many ball games, some of which involved the use of the feet. Episkyros is recognized as an early form of football by FIFA. Rutgers and Princeton were the first to play, what is now considered as the first college football game, in 1869. However, it wasn’t until the 1880s when Walter Camp bought in ruled that slowly transformed rugby into the new game of football.

Currently, football is the most loved sport, with a fan following of more than 13 billion, most of which is from America, Australia and Europe. Barcelona and Real Madrid are the teams with the top fan base.

The top football player today is Lionel Messi, who is FIFAs multiyear award winner for Player of the Year. On a close second is Cristiano Ronaldo—the only player who can be called Messi’s equal— who is also a winner of FIFAs Player of the Year Award. In fact, he and Messi have been the only two players to win that honor since 2007.
